Question

Need to solve for specific heat of steel.

Need help with specific heat of steel calculations.

My data recorded is as follows:

initial object temp= 28.6

initial water temp=28.4

initial bolt (object) mass =21.0

initial water mass= 150g

final water temp=30.9

change in water temp=2.5

I need the

1) the specific heat of steel based on my data

2))Since the specific heat of steel is listed as 490J/kg Celsius, find the percent error for my calculations of specific heat relative to the value listed

Please show work so I know how to do it in the future. Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

In this we assume that heat lossed by metal is equal to heat gained by the object

ie

qsteel = qwater

(mass)s (t)s (Cp)s = (mass) (t) (Cp)

here

(mass)s = 21g

Change in water temperature = 2.5oC

Change in object temperature = 30.9 - 28.6 = 2.3oC

Cp = 4.187 Jg-1oC-1

hence we got

21 x 2.3 x (cp)s = 150 x 2.5 x 4.187

(Cp)s = 32.5 J/goC
