Complete tables and sketches and answer the following questions based on the exercises performed during the Bacteriology laboratory exercises. INVESTIGATING CHARACTERISITICS OF BACTERIA Colony Morphology Complete Table 1. using appropriate terminology as described in the lab manual. Based on your observations, comment on the reliability of colony morphology in the identification of a given bacterial species. of Individual Cells a sketch of the following bacteria cell shapes, include an identification of the shape AND the total magnification usedExplanation / Answer
Visible characteristics of a bacterial colony is called the colony morphology of the bacteria. Form, shape, size, margin, pigmentation are different attributes of colony morphology..
Colonies that are different in appearence are mostly different in bacterial strain or species. In contrast it is also true that many different bacteria have similar colony morphlogy.
For example from Table 1 - E.coli and Serratia marcescens morphologically have similar characteristics e.g round shaped light yellowish colony with smooth margin and surface, they both are rod shaped and gram negetive bacteria. Micrococcus luteus is a gram positive cocci its colony morphologically(shape is punctiform, for bacilli it is round) is different from bacilli bacteria.
If we go with the morphology Bacillus subtilis have a different shape in colony with wrinkled surface, indicates presence of flagella in this bacteria. Although if we go with the round shape it matches with E.coli and Serratia marcescens but Bacillus subtilis is gram positive in nature other two are gram negetive.
To conclude colonial morphology may be useful in priliminary ldentification of a bacteria but it is not fully reliable source of identification, for conformation we need to do other tests.
