Question

Suppose you go from Earth to a planet where the acceleration if gravity is 3 m/s? On the new planet your mass will be 1/3 its value on earth be 9 times its value on earth be 3/10 its value on earth no change Suppose you are driving north and suddenly hit your brakes to avoid a dog in the road. As you come to a step your acceleration is directed North South Nowhere because acceleration is a scalar Downwards What is the potential energy of a 40 kg box that is 6m above the ground? (use g = 10m/s^2) 240 Nm 2400 Nm 6 J 60 J The universe is made up of energy and forces True False

Explanation / Answer

32) Your mass will not change on the new planet. Although your weight which is Mass * Acc. due to Gravity will become 3/10th.

33) If you are driving North and you apply brake, your acceleration needs to be in the opposite direction of your velocity. If the acceleration is in the same direction, it will increase the velocity. Hence, the acceleration is in south direction.

34) Potential Energy is always relative. So absolute potential energy cannot be calclated in this case. You need to define a datum or some reference with respect to which you can see the change in P.E.

In this case, if we assume that the potenetial energy is zero at zero elevation, then at 6 m elevation, the potential energy is given by m.g.h = 40* 10* 6 = 2400 J

35) This is related to your classroom lecture. I'm not sure what this exactly means. The universe is made up o energy , forces and mass I would say.
