Question

The following questions on either Highwire or Pubmed. Find 3 different organisms that produce the enzyme invertase. For each organism: Give the common name and research the scientific name of each of the three organisms. Research why each of the organisms need invertase. Simply writing that it is involved in the breakdown of sucrose is not sufficient for credit. Research details on the cellular location of the invertase. Is it located inside the cell (intracellular) or is it secreted (extracellular)? What is its subcellular location (for example try to research if it is bound to the plasma membrane, cytosolic, vacuolar, or periplasmic)?

Explanation / Answer

Invertase

Organism 1: Fungi : Pencillium sp.

These organisms produce invertase for fermentation of sugars. Addition of small quantities of sucrose to a fermenter, resulted in drastic increase in invertase production by the fungi (Poonawalla et al,, 1965). They produce both intracellular and extracellular invertases.

Organism 3 : Saccharomyces - yeast

Intracellular and extracellular invertase is produced by yeast for similar conversions.

Organism 2: Plantae

Plants acculmulate vacuolar, extracellular and intracellular inverstases. Vacuolar and cell wall invertases share some biochemical properties, e.g. they cleave Suc most efficiently between pH 4.5 and 5.0 and attack the disaccharide from the Fru residue. Neutral and alkaline invertases are less well characterized but, in contrast to the acid invertases, these enzymes appear to be Suc specific.
