Question
Map Sapling Learning A pair of constant forces of magnitude F12.7 N is applied to opposite sides of the axle of a top, as shown in the figure. The diameter of the axle is d= 9.03 mm. The angle , which has a value of 31.3°, describes the steepness of the top's sloping sides. The moment of inertia of the top about its spin axis is0.603 kg m2 What is the tangential acceleration at of the point labeled P, which is at a height of h = 3.61 cm above the floor? Number cm/s frictionless floor Previous Give Up & View Solution e Check Answer 0 NextExitExplanation / Answer
Given:
magnitude of force = F= 12.7 N
diameter of the axle =d= 9.03 mm
= 9.03 x 10-3 m
radius of axle = d/2 = 4.515 x 10-3
So torque applied = F x d/2 = 12.7 x 4.515 x 10-3 = 0.057 N.m
Moment of inertia of top about axis = I =0.603 kg.m2
so, angular acceleration of the top = torque / I = 0.057 /0.603 = 0.095 rad/s2
At point P, the radius R=h tan 31.3 = 3.61 cm x tan 31.3 = 2.19 cm
so tangential acceleration at P = angular acceleration x R
=0.095 x 2.19
= 0.208 cm/s2
so tangential acceleration =0.208 cm/s2
