An expression for the electric field that was produced by a spherically symmetri

ID: 1643500 • Letter: A

Question

An expression for the electric field that was produced by a spherically symmetric distribution is given by (2.23 times 10^3 r^2) r cap N/C, where r is measured in m. (a) What is the flux through a 22.0 cm diameter spherical surface that shares its center with the charge distribution? (b) How much charge is contained within the surface? The figure shows a section of a very long rod of radius a = 1.11 mm and linear charge density 2.81 nC/m. The rod is inside a coaxial cylindrical shell of radius b = 11.2 mm and linear charge density -6.94 nC/m. (a) What is the magnitude and direction of the electric field at a radial distance of 5.99 mm? (b) What is the magnitude and direction of the electric field at a radial distance of 19.3 mm?

Explanation / Answer

5. (a) flux = E.A

= (2.23 x 10^3 r^2)r^. (4 pi r^2)r^

= 4 x pi x 2.23 x 10^3 x r^4

r = 0.22/2 = 0.11 m

so flux = 4.10 N m^2 / C

(b) from gauss law,

flux through closed surface = Qin /e0

4.10 = Qin / (8.854 x 10^-12)

Qin = 36.3 x 10^-12 C
