Question

A point charge q1 = 4 C is located at the center of a hollow conducting shell of inner radius a = 8 cm and outer radius b = 13 cm. The magnitude of the electric field at c = 25 cm is Ec = 2.88×105 N/C.

Using Gauss’s law:

A. Determine the charge on the inner surface of the shell.

B. What is the net charge on the conducting shell?

C. Find the magnitude of the electric field for r < a, where r is a distance from the center of the hollow conducting sphere?

D. Find the magnitude of the electric field for a < r < b, where r is a distance from the center of the hollow conducting sphere?

Explanation / Answer

A) inner surface charge = - 4uC

B) q1+q2 = E r^2 /k = 2.88e5*0.25^2 /9e9 = 2e-6 or 2 uC

net charge on shell = 2uC - q1 = 2 - 4

= - 2uC

C) Electric field E = kq/r^2 = 9e9 *4e-6/r^2

= 36000/r^2 where r is in meter

D) electric field in a conductor = 0

So here Electric field will be zero
