Question
A company constructs an unusual resistor as shown below. The sequence in which these materials oppose the movement of electric charge is (Least) Au, Ag Cu, and Al (Greatest). This resistor is now connected to a battery as shown. If you were to connect a voltmeter across each segment of this resistor how would the measurements compare for the four segments and why? EXPLAIN FULLY and reference results of previous investigations in support of your response. How would the currents in the four segments compare? Why? (Again be sure to reference results from previous investigations.Explanation / Answer
1. If voltmeter is connected across the segment Au the measurement is minimum because voltmeter measures potential difference across the two points it is connected. The value it measure is V=IR, in series circuit I is same through all resistances. Hence V proportional to R.
Hence potential difference across Au region is minimum and across Al region is maximum.
It increases through regions Au, Ag, Cu and Al as like resistance.
2. All the regions are connected in series with a battery of certain emf, hence current through all resistances is same.
