Question

This problem is one of those "odd ball" problems involving a multiple lens situation in which the object distance is taken as a negative number (as I indicated in class). It is included to give practice for such a situation A peanut is placed 36.5 cm in front (left) of a lens m a two lens system: the focal length of this first lens (i.e. the lens closest to the peanut) is f_1 = +22.0 cm, the focal length of the second lens is f_2 = -18.0 cm and the distance between the two lenses is 12.0 cm. The location of the image from the first lens is. Give your answer in the form "+/-ab. c cm".

Explanation / Answer

Given data:
Focal length of 1st Lens(f) = 22 cm, Object distance from 1st Lens (u)= 36.5 cm.

solution;
Let image distance of image formed by the 1st lens be = v

so, 1/v-1/u =1/f,

1/v-1/(-36.5)=1/22

v=55.38 cm.

So image by the 1st lens is formed at 55.38 cm right of the first lens.
