Working with your group members, do some research to find out what a typical maximum value of deceleration would be for an average modern car (with anti-lock brakes) that is experiencing braking at an initial typical speed (like 50 mph) in normal, dry driving conditions.Working with your group members, do some research to find out what a typical maximum value of deceleration would be for an average modern car (with anti-lock brakes) that is experiencing braking at an initial typical speed (like 50 mph) in normal, dry driving conditions.
Explanation / Answer
What is deceleration ?
It is a form of acceleration where vehicle tends to slow down rather than speeding up. Acceleration is given as
a = dV/dt. Just put a negative sign in front of this equation. It becomes deceleration.
Now if we talk about maximum deceleration a modern car can experience or is made to expeerience has something to do with g's acting on the vehicle and the person sitting inside the car. A normal human can handle max 3 g's. So if we muliply it with 9.8 m/s2 then we will have a value of around 29.5 m/s2. Therefore, for a modern family car which expereices braking at initial speeds, the maximum deceleration would be between 9.8 m/s2 to 29.5 m/s2.
