Question
a) What is the equivalent resistance of the four resistors? In other words, what single resistor would replace all four resistors and still draw the same current from the battery?
b) What is the current directly out of the battery? A
c) The voltage across the three resistors with 11 , 48 , and 16 must be the same. TRUE OR FALSE
d) Use the information above to find and tabulate the current through and the potential difference across each resistor.
Explanation / Answer
a) 11,48 and 16 ohms are in parallel so resultant of these three resistors is
1/RP = 1/11+1/48+1/16
Rp = 5.74 ohm
5.74 and 3 ohms are in series
R tot = 3+5.74 = 8.74 ohm
b) from ohms law
v = iRtot
i = 24/8.74 = 2.75 A
in series i same so current acorss 3 ohm and 5.74 ohm has same current value that is 2.75 A
d) in parallel combination voltage is same
so voltage across 11,16 and 48 ohms has same potential difference
e) i3 = 2.75 A
v3 = 8.25 V
i5.74 = 2.75 A
v 5.74 = 2.75*5.74 = 15.875 V
in parallel v is same
v11=v48=v16 = 15.875 V
i11 = 15.875/11 = 1.435 A
i48 = 0.328 A
i16 = 0.986 A
