Question
Chapter 01, Problem 022 Gold, which has a density of 19.32 a/cm2, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber. (a) If a samole of gold with a mass cf 4430 q, pressed into a leaf of 1.155 m thickness, what is the area of the leaf? (b) tt, instead, the Odd is drawn out into e-ndrical fiber of radius 2900 tin, what is Units (a) Number (b) Number Click if you would like to Show Work for this question: Open Shom Work Units Question Attempts: 0 of 5 used SAVE FOR LATERExplanation / Answer
Given,
Density of gold, P = 19.32 g/cm3
Mass, m = 4.430 g
Volume, V = mass/density
a) Volume of gold leaf, V = 4.430/19.32 = 0.229 cm3 = 0.229 x 10-6 m3
Area of leaf, A = volume/ thickness = (0.229 x 10-6)/(1.155 x 10-6) = 0.198 m2
b) Volume, V = area x length of fibre
Area of fibre = r2= (2.9 x 10-6)2 = 2.64 x 10-11 m2
Length of fibre, L = volume/area = (0.229 x 10-6)/(2.64 x 10-11) = 8667.42 m
