Question

Suppose that two student groups A and B separately measure the length of a table. Their experimental values are:

1a.

1b.

A. Can you tell which measurement is more accurate? If so, state which one and explain your reasoning. If not then explain why not.

B. Can you tell which measurement is more precise? If so state which one and explain your reasoning. If not, explain why not.

C. Suppose that actual length of table is 2.51 m. Calculate percent discrepancies for the two groups' measurements.

D. Cont. from part (c) which group's measurement is more accurate? Explain why.

Explanation / Answer

a] No, because we don't know the actual length.

b] Yes we can tell. Group A (1a) is more precise because its uncertainty (0.02m ) is less than that (0.12 m) of groupB.

c] percentage discrepancy in A = (2.51-2.50)*100/2.51 = 0.4%

percentage discrepancy in B = (2.51-2.49)*100/2.51 = 0.8%

d] A is more accurate as it has less discrepancy.
