Question

Two masses (each with mass 2.5 g) are 10 cm apart on a frictionless table. Each has –50 mC of charge.

What is the magnitude of the net electric force on one of the charges?

What is the initial acceleration of each charge if they are allowed to move?

It is sometimes said that gravity is an extremely weak force. Demonstrate this by calculating the gravitational attraction between the two masses in this case. [Hint: use Newton’s Law of Gravitation]

How many times greater is the electric force than the gravitational force in this case?

Explanation / Answer

A) By Colombs law, electric force F =kq1q2 /r^2

= 9e9 *0.050*0.050/0.10^2

= 2.25*10^9 N

B) acceleration a =F/m

= 2.25e9/0.0025

= 9*10^11 m/s^2

C) Gravitational force = Gm1*m2/r^2

= 6.67e-11*0.0025*0.0025/0.10^2

= 4.17*10^-14 N

D) Fe/Fg = 2.25e9/4.17e-14

= 5.4*10^22 times
