Question

A physics book slides off a horizontal table top with a speed of 1.70 m/s It strikes the floor after a time of 0.480 s. Ignore air resistance Find the height of the table top above the floor. Express your answer with the appropriate units. h = Find the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor. Express your answer with the appropriate units. x = Find the magnitude of the horizontal component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor. Express your answer with the appropriate units. v_b =

Explanation / Answer

consider the motiuon of the book along the Y-direction

Voy = initial velocity = 0 m/s

ay = acceleration = 9.8 m/s2

Y = vertical displacement = height

t = time of travel = 0.48 sec

using the equation

Y = Voy t + (0.5) ay t2

Y = (0) (0.48) + (0.5) (9.8) (0.48)2

Y = 1.12 m

b)

Vox = velocity along the horizontal direction = 1.70 m/s

t = time of travel = 0.48 sec

along X-direction , horizontal displacement is given as

X = Vox t = 1.70 x 0.48 = 0.82 m

c)

Along the X-direction , there is no force , hence acceleration is zero along the X-direction. so the velocity along the X-direction remains same as the initial velocity 1.70 m/s
