Help PART 3: PROBLEM SOLVING-30 POINTS INSTRUCTIONS: Answer a minimum of 1 question (out of a total of 2 question); 30 POINTS each. Show your work/ reasoning / relevant equations. You will get partial credit for use of correet equations and procedure (a) Alyssa, Tioluwani and Dominika are traveling to Charleston for Labor Day weekend in a car at a constant speed of 55.0 m/s. They pass Officer Jason, on a motorcycle hidden behind a billboard. One second after the speeding car passes the billboard, Jason sets out from the billboard to catch them, accelerating at a constant rate of 3.50 m/s. How long does it take him to overtak the car?.Explanation / Answer
Velocity of car be Vc = 55 m/s (constant speed)
After t = 1s, bike(motor vehicle) started chasing the car
so, distance travelled by car in 1s = 55*1 = 55m
acceleration of bike a = 3.5 m/s2
let's say he overtakes in time t s
distance by car = 55t
distance by bike = 0.5*3.5*t^2 = 1.75t^2
so, 1.75t^2 = 55t + 55
=> 1.75t^2 - 55t - 55 = 0
solving the quadratic equation gives,
t1 = 32.39s and t2 = -0.97 (since time cannot be negative)
time = 32.39s
