Question

A small sphere of mass m = 640 g and charge q_1 = 32.8 nC is attached to the end of a string and hangs vertically as in the figure. A second charge of equal mass and charge q_2 = -58.0 nC is located below the first charge a distance d = 2.00 am below the first charge as in the figure. (a) Find the tension in the string 0.106 N (b) If the string can withstand a maximum tension of 0.180 N what is the smallest value sigma can have before the string breaks? differs from the correct answer by more than 100% cm

Explanation / Answer

(A) T = m g + Fe

and Fe = k q1 q2 / d^2

Fe = (9 x 10^9) (32.8 x 10^-9)(58 x 10^-9) / 0.02^2

Fe = 0.0428 N

T = (6.40 x 10^-3 x 9.81) + (0.0428)

T = 0.106 N

(B) T = m g + Fe

0.180 = (6.40 x 10^-3 x 9.81) + Fe

Fe = 0.117 N

Fe = k q1 q2 / d^2

0.117 = (9 x 10^9)(32.8 x 10^-9)(58 x 10^-9) / d^2

d = 0.012 m Or 1.2 cm
