Question
For all questions: you must show how you got your answer. This exercise is due on Thursday, 9/14 You are located at 53 N: What is the solar angle at noon at the Summer Solstice? What is the solar angle at noon at the Winter Solstice? What is the highest possible solar angle during the year if you live at 38.5'? On what day will it occur? You are on a ship in the Pacific Ocean: On June 21 (Summer Solstice), you measure the solar angle at noon-it is 83.5 your south. What is latitude? Six months later, on December 22nd (Winter Solstice). you measure the solar angle at noon -it is 12.5 degree to your south. What is your new latitude? Assuming you traveled directly along a single meridian, how far (in Km) did you travel from June 21^st to December 22^nd?Explanation / Answer
Answer 1.
The sun forms a 90o angle at noon at 23.5o N
On the summer solstice, for every degree of latitude you move away from 23.5o, the sun angle at noon decreases by 1 degree. So at 530 the angle moved away = 53-23.5 = 29.50
The angle decrement to= 90-29-0.5 = 60.50
Hence at summer solstice angle made is= 60.50
At winter solstice
The noon angle = Noon Sun Angle = 90 - Arc Distance
Subsolar point= 23.5
Location : 640
Noon angle = 900-23.50-640 = 2.50
Hence noon angle at winter solstice is 2.50
