Question

Which of the following graphs applies to each situation? Each graph shows the behaviour of two objects: east is in the direction of positive d.(E.g., if graph A applies to situation 1, and C to the rest, enter ACCCCC) An upward moving elevator colliding with a downward moving elevator A jogger overtaking a walker. A car, initially at rest, accelerating and a car moving initially at constant speed applying the brakes until it stops. An initially moving truck speeding up eastward and a westward moving track. A train, initially moving at a steady speed, has brakes applied to match the speed of a train on a parallel track. An eastward moving track applying the brakes and a westward moving truck speeding up.

Explanation / Answer

1) An upward moving elevator has positive velocity and a downward moving elevator has negaitive velocity. After collision, they come to rest. This matches F

2) A jogger overtaking a walker. Both of their velocities are constant. Hence they must be shown as straight lines. This matches B.

3) A car, initially at rest, accelerating and a car moving initially at constant speed, applying brakes until it stops. First car must be shown as a straight line parallel to time axis initially and an upward turning curve later. Second car must be shown as a curve turning down , this matches the situation A.

4) For the eastward truck velocity must be positive and must increase, for the westward truck velocity which is initially negative must become zero. This matches situtation C.

5) A train moving at steady speed will be shown as a straight line inclined at some angle to time axis. Another train which is moving at larger speed later decelerates till their velocities are same. This is shown as initially a straight line with larger slope then a curve and later a straight line parallel to the first straight line. This matches D.

6) An eastward moving truck applying the brakes and a west ward moving truck speeding up. First truck is shown as a curve which starts with positive slope and later becomes parallel to time axis. Second truck is shown as a curve with negative slope which turns so that it's slope increases (becomes more negative). This matches H
