It lands on the flat roof of a 130 m tall nearby building If the ball was hit when it was 12 m above the ground, what horizontal dstance does it travel before i ands on the building? Explanation / Answer

Given,

v0 = 29 m/s ; theta = 49 deg ; H = 13 m ; h = 1.2 m

v0x = v0 cos(theta) = 29 x cos49 = 19.03 m/s

v0y = v0 sin(theta) = 29 x sin49 = 21.89 m/s

vertical displacement of the ball is = 13 - 1.2 = 11.8 m

from eqn of motion:

11.8 = 21.89 t - 0.5 x 9.8 x t^2

4.9t^2 - 21.89 t + 11.8 = 0

the above quadratic eqn gives us:

t = 3.84 s

the horizontal distance will then be:

D = v0x t = 19.03 x 3.84 = 73.08 m

Hence, D = 73.08 m
