Question
Question 4 (4 points) The figure shows a motion diagram of two wind-up toys moving from left to right. The toys begin moving at the same tim and the time intervals are also the same. origin First, describe in words the relative motions and positions of the two toys. Second, which graph would correctly show position vs. time for both toys? How do you know? Which line corresponds to which toy (circle or square)? Third, which graph would correctly show velocity vs. time for both toys? How do you know? Which line corresponds to which toy (circle or square)?Explanation / Answer
The toy 1( represented by a circle ) starts from the origin, whereas the toy 2( represented by a square) starts from a point which is on the positive side of the origin. Therefore, graphs A and B cannot represent the situation because in these graphs both the particles are starting from the origin.
We can clearly see from the figure that toy 1 is travelling more distance compared to toy 2, therefore these two toys meet at some point. Now coming to graphs C and D we can see that it is the graph D that represents the chance of the two toys meeting. hence D represents the correct graph
The distance between two circles as well as squares is the same, implying that they are travelling equal distances in equal intervals of time, which means their velocities are constant (not changing with time). Also, the velocity of toy 1 is greater than the velocity of toy 2 because toy 1 is travelling a greater distance compared to toy 2 in the same interval of time, also both are moving in the positive x direction, hence their velocities are positive, therefore, H is the correct graph.
