Question

Give a brief answer for the following: (a) In broad jumping, sometimes called long jumping, what factors determine the length of the jump? (b) Is it possible to be accelerating if you are traveling at constant speed? Explain your answer. (c) In 1969, three Apollo astronauts left Cape Canaveral, went to the moon and back, and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. Admiral McCain, bid them good-bye at the Cape and then sailed to the Pacific Ocean on the USS Okinawa where he picked them up. Compare the displacements of the astronauts and the admiral. (d) Explain why, in American football, a field goal is kicked from the ground while a punt is drop kicked. (e) Can an object be moving when its acceleration is zero? If so, give an example. (f) Can an object be accelerating when its speed is zero? If so, give an example. (g) Two balls are rolling along a table top, ball A with twice the horizontal velocity of ball B. Ball A starts from further back than B, however, so that the two balls roll off the edge of the table at the same instant. Which of the two balls reaches the floor first? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

(a) velocity at the starting point of jump and angle of jump (with horizontal). Max at 45 degree angle.

(b) yes , in circular motion speed is constant but direction changes due to centripetal acceleration.

(c)all have same displacement . As displacement is difference of final and initial position. As all have same initial as well as final position so same displacement.

(d)in field goal we can not adjust the angle after a particular value of angle with horizontal while in punt we can adjust the angle . As height and range are function of kicking velocity and kicking angle. Generally ground kick is performed for long range shot while punt for height as height can be achieved by adjusting kicking angle with horizontal.

(e)yes , any object with moving constant velocity.

(f)yes, a particle at highest point, projected vertically upward. At highest point velocity (speed ) is zero but acceleration is -g due to gravity .

(g)at the same time .

When the balls leave the table both has velocity in horizontal direction . At the time of leaving the table both has zero velocity in vertical direction , acceleration is same in vertical direction (-g ) , displacement is also same in vertical direction . So by 2nd equation of motion both will take same time
