ENGR 215-Engineering Fundamentals 111 Department of Physics and Engineering Modelling Due September 20, 2017 20 Points Individual assignment. Prepare a spreadsheet model that compares the cost of using an array of 8 single family structures with a single structure that accommodates 8 families. Use the criteria and costs given here. Use standard engineering spreadsheet format (see list of required items below and an example on Canvas). NOTE: UPLOAD BOTH A PDF AND AN XLSX FILE Criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Each unit has a side offset of 3m, a back offset of 5m and a front offset of 10m. Each unit has 3 windows for every 10 people with a minimum of 2 windows. Each single family unit has one door and multi-family units have two doors. Each unit has a utility access panel. Any roof span greater than 10 m requires a center column every 3 m running perpendicular to the span. Assume 5 people per family and 6 square meters of floor space per person. 6. Title information (title, class/section, names, date) 2. Problem description 3. Controlling equations and parameter definition 4. Figures(s) 5. Computation table 6. Summary of results

Explanation / Answer

For every family living in different unit
1. for 5 people per family
   floor space required , A = 6*5 = 30 sq m
   let l = 6 m, b = 5 m
   then including offsets
   L = back offset + front offset + l = 5 + 10 + 6 = 21 m
   similiarly B = side offset + b = 8 m
   so total area A' = 21*8 = 168 m^2

   number of windows = 2

   Number of doors = 1

   Utility access panel = 1

   No roof span is greater than 10 m so, number of columns required = 4

   Hence cost of 1 unit = A'*4 + 6*A' + 20*A + 40 + 20*2 + 100 + 4*200 = 3260 units
   so for 8 families in different units, cost = 26080 units

2. for 8 families in one unit
   number of people = 5*8 = 40
   floor space required , A = 6*40 = 240 sq m
   let l = 16 m, b = 15 m
   then including offsets
   L = back offset + front offset + l = 5 + 10 + 16 = 31 m
   similiarly B = side offset + b = 18 m
   so total area A' = 31*18 = 558 m^2

   number of windows = 3*4 = 12

   Number of doors = 2

   Utility access panel = 1

   both roof spansa are greater than 10 m , so columns required = 6 + 2 = 8
   Hence cost of 1 unit = A'*4 + 6*A' + 20*A + 40*2 + 20*12 + 500 + 36*200 = 3260 units
   so for 8 families in same unit = 18400 units, which is lesser than for 8 different units
