Question

for a intro to mechanics class Probs. 2-25/26 2-27· The beam is to be hoisted using two chains. Determine the magnitudes of forces FA and FB acting on each chain in order to develop a resultant force of 600 N directed along the positive y axis. Set = 45°. 2-28. The beam is to be hoisted using two chains. If the resultant force is to be 600 N, directed along the positive y axis, determine the magnitudes of forces FA and FB acting on each chain and the orientation of FB so that the magnitude of FB is a minimum. FA acts at 30° from the y axis as shown. FB Probs. 2-27128

Explanation / Answer

For the beam to remain suspended, the net force in the vertical and horizontal direction should be zero.

so, FBcos45 + FAcos30 = 600

and,

- FBsin45 + FAsin30 = 0

=> FB = 0.7071FA

substitute this in the first equation to get:

0.7071FAcos45 + FAcos30 = 600

=> FA = 439.23 N

therefore, FB = 0.7071(439.23) = 310.58 N.
