Question

1. For each of the following parts, state whether there exists an ideal gas process that satisfies the conditions given. If so, describe the process and give an example from tutorial if possible. If not, explain why such a process does not exist. There is heat transfer, but the temperature of the gas does not change (Q-0, 7-0). a. b. There is no heat transfer, but the temperature of the gas changes (Q-0,AT*0). c. There is no heat transfer, but work is done on the gas (Q = 0, W 0). d. There is no work done on the gas, but there is heat transfer (W= 0, Q-0).

Explanation / Answer

(a) it is possible. This process is called as the isothermal process. The heat absorbed or lost is used to do work by the gas or on the gas. for example, when volume of gas changes at constant tempertaure.

(b)this is possible. This proces is called as adiabatic process.temperature changes because of the change in the inernal energy of the gas.for example, expansion or compression of a gas in an perfect insulated container.

(c) This is possible. This is again adiabatic process.

(d) this is possible. this happens when the volume of gas is constant and doesnot change. Here gained or lost is used to change the internal energy of the gas.
