Question

3 +-/4 points MI3 4.8-X.008 When you apply a horizontal force of 50 N to a block, the block moves across the floor at a constant speed (ukus) (a) What happens if instead you apply a force of 43 N to the block initially at rest? My Notes The block moves at a constant speed, but it moves more slowly. o The block decelerates (the speed continually decreases) o The block doesn't move (b) When you apply a force of 43 N to the block initially at rest, what is the magnitude of the horizontal component of the force that the floor exerts on the block? Fhor = (c) What happens if instead you exert a force of 55 N? o The block doesn't move. o The block accelerates (the speed continually increases) The block moves at a constant speed, but it moves faster. (d) When you apply a force of 55 N, what is the magnitude of the horizontal component of the force that the floor exerts on the block? Fhor =

Explanation / Answer

since the block is moving with constant speed,i,e accelartion is zero ,frictional force = applied force

a) here the applied force 43 N is less that static frictional force ,hence the block does not move

so the answer is The block doesn't move.

b) when the block is at rest, the horizontal component of force that the floor exerts on the block is Fhor = 43 N

c) 55 N > static frictional force and also > kinetic frictional force hence the block accelarates

d) if F = 55 N ,then Horizontal component of force that the floor exerts on the block is kinetic firctional force = 50 N
