Question
A heavily insulated canister contains water at 50 degrees centigrade. Outside the canister the air temperature is 20 degrees centigrade. If the canister is adiabatic(i.e. no heat is transferred) and a closed system which of the following circumstances can occur? Choose the most correct answer.
Only sensible heat can be felt from the container
The water evaporates into the air
Heat is exchanged between the water and the air
There is no heat exchanged between the water and air
A.Only sensible heat can be felt from the container
B.The water evaporates into the air
C.Heat is exchanged between the water and the air
D.There is no heat exchanged between the water and air
Explanation / Answer
if the cannister is heavily insulated and and a closed system then it is perfectly adiabatic and there is no way that any exchange of heat or matter can take place between the cannister and the air surrounding it. In an ideal situation the option-D seems to be the correct option. Sensible heat is related to change in temperature of a gas with no change of phase. so here it does not apply. Since there is no exchange of anytype. so there is no heat exchange between water and air.
