Question

oblem 3.09 Correct A tennis ball rolls off the edge of a tabletop 0.550 m above the floor and strikes the floor at a point 1.60 m horizontally from the edge of the table Part c Find the magnitude of the velocity of the ball just before it strikes the floor 5.00 m/s Submit My Answers Give Up Correct Part D Find the direction of the velocity of the ball just before it strikes the floor A2 55.496 below the horizont Submit My Answers Give Up Incorrect, Try Again; 2 attempts remaining; no points deducted

Explanation / Answer

s = (1/2)gt^2
s = 0.55m
g = 9.8 m/s^2

0.55 = (1/2)(9.8)t2
t = SQRT[1.1/9.8] = SQRT[0.11224]
t = 0.335 seconds

The ball rolls off the table so it only has a horizontal velocity component as it leaves the table. It then hits the floor 1.6 meters from the table edge. It does this 0.335 seconds after leaving the table.

speed = distance/time = 1.6/0.335
speed = 4.776 m/s

c. The horizontal component we just found. We just need to find the vertical component and this is due to gravity.

v = g*t = 9.8(0.335) = 3.283 m/s

magnitude = SQRT[(4.776)2 + (3.283)2]
magnitude = SQRT[33.58]
magnitude = 5.8 m/s

The direction relative to the floor will be:
tan(Angle) = (vertical component)/(horizontal component)
tan(Angle) = 3.283/4.776 = 0. 687
Angle = 34.5 degrees
