Question

Pre-Class Problem Look at "GOT IT? 21.2" on page 380 of your Wolfson text. Calcul and C of the cube for orientation (a) and (b). What is the total for either orientation? ext. Calculate the flux through the sides A, B, ation (a) and (b). What is the total flux through all 6 sides of the cube a) ÞE(A) = 0,$E(B) = 0, ÞE(C) = s’E b) ÞE(A) = 0, ÞE(B) = .75°E, ÞE(C) = .75E Total flux = 0, in either case Look at Example 21.4 to learn about line symmetry, and answer these two questions: 1. Instead of a sphere, what geometric shape should you use as a Gaussian surface when working with a line of charge instead of a point charge or sphere of charge? 2. How do you calculate the surface area of that shape?

Explanation / Answer

We know that the electric flux through a closed surface is flux = E*A cos theta

where theta is the angle between the electric field and normal to the surface area

a )

the faces A and B the angle is 90 degrees and for face C the angle is zero then

the flux through faces A and B is zero and through face C is flux = E*s^2 cos0 = E*s^2

b)

here the cube is tilted about 45 degrees then

but for the face A , the angle is 90 degrees

for faces B,C are the angle is 45 degrees

so the flux through A is zero and

through B, C are

flux B = C = E*s^2 cos 45 = E*s^2*0.7071
