Question

A standard interior staircase has steps each with a rise (height) of 20 cm and a run (horizontal depth) of 25 cm. Research suggests that the stairs would be safer for descent if the run were, instead, 31 cm. For a particular staircase of total height 5.80 m, how much farther (in m) would the staircase extend into the room at the foot of the stairs if this change in run were made?

Explanation / Answer

convert 5.80 m to cm --> 580cm divide 580 cm (total height) by the height of each rise (20 cm) 580/20 = 29 thus there are 29 stairs.. if there are 29 stairs then extending each run by 6 cm (30cm - 25cm) would cause for an extension of 29 * 6 cm = 174 cm convert 174 cm to m and you have your answer of 1.74 m
