Question
Chronic exposure to arsenic is associated with cancer and hypertension. Here we evaluated the association between arsenic exposure and an epigenetic marker of cancer (LINE-1 methylation levels) in a total of 236 subjects living in rural Bangladesh. The subjects' arsenic exposure levels (i.e., drinking water, hair and nail arsenic concentrations) were measured. Epigenetic markers were measured in all subjects. Our findings demonstrated that chronic exposure to arsenic was inversely associated with LINE-1 methylation levels in blood leukocyte DNA and this was more pronounced in females than males.
Is study 1 is a a) Cross-sectional study b) Ecologic study c) Case-control study ?
Explanation / Answer
This study is a Cross sectional study because here the research was done to evaluate the association between arsenic exposure and an epigenetic marker of cancer by analyzing one group of subjects i.e. the Cancer patient’s data. If the study was done using two or more groups i.e. cancer group and noncancer group, then the study might be fall under case control study. If the study has considered the subjects of one particular geography then the study will be called as Ecological study.
