Question

a red car and a green car, identical except for the color, movetoward each other in adjacent lanes and parallel to an xaxis. At time t = 0, the red car is atxr = 0 and the green car is atxg = 250 m. If the red car has a constantvelocity of 24.0 km/h, the cars pass each other at x =45.5 m, and if it has a constant velocity of 42.0 km/h, they passeach other at x = 76.6 m. What are (a)the initial velocity (in km/h) and (b) theacceleration of the green car?

All i really need is to find the acceleration because i found theinitial velocity to be 49.81km/hr and i seem to be lost

Explanation / Answer

(i) case, Vred=24 km/h=20/3 m/s distance travelled=45.5 m time(t)=d/V=6.82 secs now the green car takes the same time to reach a distance250-45.5=204.5 m using S=Ut+1/2at2 we get 204.5=6.82U+1/2a(6.82)2 ------ (1) 2nd case, Vred=42 km/h=35/3 m/s distance travelled=76.6 m t=6.56 secs distance travelled by the green car=250-76.6=173.4 m again using the equation we get 173.4=6.56U+1/2a(6.56)2 ------ (2) by solving (1) and (2),we get the answer.
