Question
For each item in the following list, give a reasonable method of sterilization. Your choice of method is limited by the following conditions:
method must sterilize, not just disinfect.
method must not destroy the item or render it useless unless there is no other choice.
where an object containing something is given, you must sterilize everything using the same method. In other words if you need to sterilize a jar with Vaseline You cannot claim that the jar is sterilized by method A and the vaseline is sterilized by method B.
you need to be very specific…for example, you can’t just say moist heat since not all the methods that use moist heat are capable of sterilization.
you can only use the same method twice.
Some examples of the methods are autoclaving, using ethylene oxide, dry oven, gamma radiation, etc.
ITEM/Object Method of Sterilization
1- Packaged Bandages
2- Vaccines
Explanation / Answer
1. Bandages can be sterilized by exposure to gamma radiation. Gamma radiations are provided by exposure to Cobalt-60. Cobalt-60 has half-life of 5.27 years. So, even if the bandage is exposed to milligram quantity of Cobalt-60, sterilization would be achieved.
2. A vaccine is generally a killed suspension of sterilized bacteria. So, you can use autoclaving for sterilization of vaccines.
If the vaccine contains live bacteria, then autoclaving cannot be used. It will kill the live bacteria; and nullify the effect of vaccine. So such vaccines should be given antiseptic treatment. Ethylene oxide can be used as the preferred antiseptic. It is a broad spectrum alkylating agent. It alkylates the DNA in bacteria (present in the vaccine); it does not kill the bacteria. It just destructs the process of bacterial replication, so that a further bacterium does not grow in the vaccine.
