Question
On a frictionless, horizontal air table, puck A (with mass0.250 kg) is moving toward puck B (with mass 0.330 kg),which is initially at rest. After the collision, puck Ahas a velocity of 0.120 m/s to the left, and puck B has avelocity of 0.830 m/s to the right. (a) What was the speed of puck Abefore the collision???? m/s
(b) Calculate the change in the total kinetic energy of the systemthat occurs during the collision. ??? J (a) What was the speed of puck Abefore the collision?
??? m/s
(b) Calculate the change in the total kinetic energy of the systemthat occurs during the collision. ??? J
Explanation / Answer
Mass of puck A is M = 0.25 kg
Mass of puck B is m = 0.33 kg
Initial velocity of the puck A is U = U
Initial velocity of the puck B is u = 0
Velocity of the puck A after collision V = -0.12 m / s
Velocity of the puck B after collision v = 0.83 m / s
From law of consaervation of momentum ,
MU + mu = mv + MV
0.25 U + 0 = 0.2739 – 0.03
= -0.2439
U = -0.9756 m / s
