Question

Problem A tall tree is growing across a riverfrom you. You would like to know the distance between yourself andthe tree,as well as its height, but are unable to make themeasurements directly. However, by using a mirror to form an imageof the tree and then measuring the image distance and the imageheight, you can calculate the distance to the tree as well as itsheight. Suppose that this mirror produces an image of the sun, andthe image is located 0.8691 m from the mirror. The same mirror isthen used to produce an image of the tree. The image of the tree is0.9584 m from the mirror. (a) How far away is thetree? (b) The image height of the tree has amagnitude of 0.13 m. How tall is the tree?

(a) do = m/sm^2mm/s^2

(b) ho = m^2m/sm/s^2m

Explanation / Answer

(a) How far away is the tree?

focal length of the mirror=0.8691m

when it forms the image of the tree

di=0.9584m

using the equation 1/do +1/di=1/f

so 1/do=1/0.8691-1/0.9584=d0= 9.3288m

magnitude of magnification=do/di= 9.3288/0.9584=9.7337

(b) The image height of the tree has amagnitude of 0.13 m. How tall is the tree?

size of the tree=magnification*size of theimage=9.7337*0.13=1.2653m

(a) do = m/sm^2mm/s^2

(b) ho =
