Question
In a local bar, a customer slides an empty beer mug down thecounter for a refill. The height of the counter is 1.22m. The mugslides off the counter and strikes the floor 1.40m from the base ofthe counter. (a) With what velocity did the mug leave the counter?(b) What was the direction of the mug's velocity just before it hitthe floor?I've done (a) and got v = 2.8 m/s. I, however, needhelp on (b). I'm not sure what to use here.

Explanation / Answer
Height h = 1.22 m
Horizontal range R = 1.4 m
Time taken to reach the ground t = [ 2h / g]
= 0.4989 s
We know R = v t
From this velocity of the mug leave the counter v = R /t
= 2.805 m / s
(b). Horizontal component of velocity of the mug when it reachesthe ground u = v
u= 2.805 m / s
Vertical component of velocity when it reaches the ground U= gt
= 4.899 m / s
So, the direction of the mug's velocity just before it hit thefloor = tan -1 ( U / u )
= 60.15 degrees with the horizontal .
