Question
Evaluate the following statements:
A. The success of genetic engineering in human medicine has been largely limited to the production of medicines used to treat disease rather than curing genetic disease.
B. With few exceptions, attempts to insert functioning copies of genes into patients who need them have been unsuccessful.
1. A is true and B is false.
2. B is true and A is false.
3. Both A and B are true, and B provides a valid explanation of A.
4. Both A and B are true, but B does not provide a valid explanation of A.
5. Both A and B are false.
Explanation / Answer
3. Both A and B are true, and B provides a valid explanation of A.
“Genetic engineering” is based on the recombinant DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) technology, the modification of an organism’s genetic makeup, which results in the modification of its phenotype. A selected gene is modified and reinserted into a plant/animal cell of the same species or a gene from an individual of one species is inserted into another species by using several gene transfer techniques like microinjection, liposome fusion, electroporation, or else using chemicals like polyethylene glycol.
Despite the expectations of genetic engineering in the treatment of genetic diseases, a few success successful treatment strategies were established due to the challenges in successful gene insertion.
