Question
A passenger on a stopped bus notices that rain is fallingverticallyjust outside the window. When the bus moves with constant velocity,the
passenger observes that the falling raindrops are now making anangle
of 15 with respect to the vertical.
a. What is the ratio of the speed of the raindrops to the speed ofthe bus?
b. Find the speed of the raindrops, given that the bus is movingwith a speed of 18 m/s?
I am able to setup the vectors and thought part a. would besin15/cos15 but that doesn't seem to be the right answer.
Explanation / Answer
Speed of the rain drop is X angle between rain drop to bus is 750 Cos 750= X / 18X = 18 * cos750 = 4.658m/sec The ratio of the speed of theraindrops to the speed of the bus = 4.658 / 18 = 0.2588 Cos 750= X / 18
X = 18 * cos750 = 4.658m/sec The ratio of the speed of theraindrops to the speed of the bus = 4.658 / 18 = 0.2588
