Question
Three 60.0 W, 120 V lightbulbs are connected across a 120 Vpower source. Find (a) the total power delivered to the three bulbsand (b) the potential differnece across each. Assume that theresistance of each bulb is constant (even though, in reality theresistance increases marked;y with current). Three 60.0 W, 120 V lightbulbs are connected across a 120 Vpower source. Find (a) the total power delivered to the three bulbsand (b) the potential differnece across each. Assume that theresistance of each bulb is constant (even though, in reality theresistance increases marked;y with current).Explanation / Answer
you've not mentioned whether the bulbs are connected in series orin parrallel. Assuming series case = total power is given by 1/P = 1/P1 + 1/P2.... thus 1/P = 1/60 + 1/60 + 1/60 = 3/60 P = 60/3 = 20 W Potential difference is split equally across each resistor, V = 120/3 = 40 V Taking Parrallel case P is given by P = P1 + P2 +P2.... P = 60 + 60 + 60 = 180 W Voltage across each resistor would be the same, and equalto the source voltage. V = 120 V
