Question
I'm havinga hard time getting the answer to this question. I am using Snell'slaw of refraction such that:
n1/p +n2/q = (n2-n1)/R
Where
R=12cm
n1=1.00
n2=1.60
p=either20cm, 8cm, 4cm, 2cm
Here isthe question:
One end ofa long glass rod (n = 1.60) has the shape of a convexsurface of radius 12.0 cm. An object is positioned in air along theaxis of the rod in front of the convex surface. Find the imageposition that corresponds to each of the following objectpositions.
(a) 20.0cm
(b) 8.00 cm
(c) 4.00 cm
(d) 2.00 cm
Explanation / Answer
given that n1= 1 n2 = 1.6 r = 12.0cm the equation relating object distance to imagedistance n1/s + n2/s1 =n2- n1/r w hen s = 8.00cm 1/8cm + 1.6/s1 = 1.6 -1/12.0 solving s1 = -21.33cm when s = 4.0cm s1 = -8cm when s = 2.00cm s1 = -3.5cm
