Question

A 0.70 kg book moves vertically upward adistance of 12 m, and then verticallydownward 12 m, returning to its initialposition.
(a) How much work is done by gravity during the upwardmotion of the book?
1 J
(b) How much work is done by gravity during the downward motion ofthe book?
2 J
(c) What is the total work done on the book by gravity during thecomplete round trip?
3 J
(d) On the basis of your answer to part (c), would you say that thegravitational force is conservative or nonconservative? 4 Thegravitational force is conservative. Thegravitational force is non conservative.
4 Thegravitational force is conservative. Thegravitational force is non conservative. 4 Thegravitational force is conservative. Thegravitational force is non conservative. 4

Explanation / Answer

w = change in kinetic energy but the change here is equal to mgh so W = mgh = (0.70*-9.81*12) = -82.404 J it's the opposite way around W = 82.404 J the total work is equal to zero. (depending on your coordinate system these answers might be flippedaround... the upward could be considered positive work and thedownward negative) So gravity is a conservative force.
