Lab Analysis: Ewolution and Darwinian Snails Why Does Evolution Matter Now? 10. How does the misuse of antibiotics lead to the evolution of antibiotic- pathogens such as the tuberculosis bacterium? Review Questions 11-14 pertain to the Darwinian Snails simulation activity. During this simulation activity, you were instructed to save all of your histograms in a Word docu- ment. Please attach your hinogram printous to the Lab Review to be turned in for grading 11. a. Using the data from your experiments, list the three conditions that are necessary for snail shell thickness to evolve by natural selection.

Explanation / Answer

Antibiotics have saved countless lives on earth but in the last two or three decades there has been a rise in the irrational use of antibiotics. This rise of irrational use has resulted in the development of drug resistance.Drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections have become a serious threat in the U.S. It is most commonly spread through and most commonly appears in the lungs. The most common causes are over the counter sale, incomplete as well as incorrect treatment, and lack of new drugs.

There are two main ways- first is the horizontal gene transfer as the bacteria inherits genes on mobile genetic elements such as plasmids allowing antibiotic resistance, and the second way is mutation which removes drug sensitive competitors leaving behind the resistant ones to reproduce due tyo natural selection. Theses are two ways through which the antibiotics may develop drug resistance.
