Question
I got part a right, but for some reason I cannot get the correct answer for part b. please help. I will show my workIn Fig. 21-23, the particles have charges q1 = -q2 = 210 nC and q3 = -q4 = 98 nC, and distance a = 5.7 cm. What are the (a) x and (b) y components of the net electrostatic force on particle 3?
F31=8.99E9*[(210)(98)/(.057^2)]
=.0569
F32=8.99E9*[(210)(98)/(.057*sqrt(2))^2)]
=-.028472
(the expert solution says its negative although I am not sure why)
F34 doesnt matter in part 2
Fnety=-.0569+.028472sin(45)
=-.548867
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
Explanation / Answer
When you plugged in the values for q1,q2, etc... remember they are nanocoulombs so 10-9 should be multiplied by the values. i.e. 210 x 10-9C instead of 210C.
