Question
A coal mine uses rail cars to transport coal. A group of 3 cars is allowed to roll horizontally without friction under a chute filled with coal. As the cars roll under the chute, it opens and begins dropping coal vertically into the car. Each car has a mass = 1,500 kg and can hold 8,500 kg of coal. The initial velocity of the cars is 4.0 m/s.A) What is the speed of the three cars after they are each fillled to capacity with coal?
The answer is .60 m/s but I am unsure on how to do it.
B) Dyanmite is placed on the coupling between cars 2 and 3 of a new set. Just before the cars reach the bridge the dynamite explodes. No car moves vertically, but 2 and 3 decouple and then car 3 is obsereved to be at rest.
What is the speed of the (still coupled) cars 1 & 2??
