Question

Question 1

Calculate how much pressure (due to the liquid) would be on a 92 kg person if they were 99 m deep in...

a.)...freshwater. The density of freshwater is 1000 kg/m3. Express your answer in both pascals and atmospheres. 1 atm = 1.013×105 Pa.
1 ____________Pa
2 ____________atm

b.)...saltwater. The density of saltwater is 1030 kg/m3. Express your answer in both pascals and atmospheres. 1 atm = 1.013×105 Pa.
3 ____________Pa
4 ____________atm

Question 2

A 70159 lb force is applied to a surface that measures 8 in long and 35 in wide. Determine the pressure exerted on the surface by the force in both psi and Pa. 1 Pa = 1.45×10-4 psi.
1 ___________psi
2 ___________Pa

Explanation / Answer

according to princeple of Buoyance,

P = gh

here h = depth

(a) for freshwater ( = 1000 kg/m^3)

P = 1000*9.8*99

 (1) P = 970200 pa

(2)  P = 7.800 atm

(b) for saltwater   ( = 1030 kg/m^3)

P = 1030*9.8*99

 (1) P = 999306 pa

 (2) P = 9.864 atm

-----------------------------------------------

from the definition,

pressure P = force / area

P = 70159/8*35 lb/in^2

P = 250.56  lb/in^2

(2) P = 1728.91 * 10^3 pa

(1) P = 250.691 psi
