Question
You are in the middle of the salt flats on your motorcycle when you decide to stop for a break to enjoy the heat. When you try to start it up again it won’t start because the battery is dead. You decide to push start your bike. This involvespushing your bike until it has increased its momentum by 3.000 x 103 kg-m/s, then jumping on and popping the clutch into first from neutral.
a) What impulse must you give to the bike to start it?
b) If you can push with a force of 50.0 N, how long do you have to do so to
to start the bike?
c) If your bike has a mass of 1.000 x 103 kg, to what speed do you need to get to start the bike?
Explanation / Answer
sol:
(a)
The change of momentum will equal to the amount of impulse that has to given to the bike to start from its neutral position.
thus,
change of momentum=impluse= 3*10^3 kg.m/s= 3000kg.m/s
(b)
we know that,
impulse= force . time
time = impulse/ force
= 3*10^3/50
= 60 s = 1 min.
so,
1 min time will take to start the bike if pushing with a force of 50N.
(c)
mass of the bike(m) = 1000kg (given)
change of momentum = mv- 0 (as the bike starts from neutral positon ,its intial momentum is 0)
change of momentum=impulse = 3*10^3 kg.m/s =3000kg.m/s (given)
the velocity of the bike to satrt v= 3000/1000
=3 m/s
