Question

Identify which of the following statements are FALSE....and then explain WHY they are false, (definitely modified 1-9) (a) The hereditary information of a cell is passed on by its proteins. (b) Bacterial DNA is found in the cytosol. (c) All cells of the same organism have the same number of chromosomes (with the exception of egg & sperm cells). (d) The cytosol contains membrane-enclosed organelles, such as lysosomes. (e) Nuclei, mitochondria and peroxisomes are surrounded by a double membrane (f) Protozoans are complex organisms with a set of specialized cells that form tissues, such as flagella, mouthparts, stinging darts, and leg-like appendages. (g) lysosomes, peroxisomes and golgi are sites of degradation for various cellular material

Explanation / Answer

Please find the answers below:

a: False : Heridity of information is passed in all organisms ranging from unicellular prokaryotes to multicellular eukaryotes by the means of DNA. This has been experimentally proved that DNA is passed on from parent to daughter cells in semi-conservative manner.

b. True: Bacteria are prokaryotes and thus lack membrane bound organelles including nucleus. Thus, their DNA or plasmid resides in the cytosol.

c. True: All the somatic cells are diploid in nature whereas the germinal cells are haploid in nature. Thus, all the somatic cells contain same DNA content and architecture whereas the germline cells contain half of it.

d. True: In eukaryotes, the membrane bound organelles are present and found in the cytosol such as endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria etc.

e.True: All of these cytoplasmic organelles have a double layerd lipid membrane outside them which is almost similar in nature to the plasma membrane of the cell.

f.False: Protozoa are simple unicellular organisms which lack specialized organs for movement and locomotion since they reside as a parasite in most of their life cycle. Being a parasite, protozoa are devoid of these cellular extensions like flagella, cilia etc and thus are comprised of simple cellular structure.

g. True: The GERL complex or the association of golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum and lysosomes represents the site of packaging and distribution of material across the cell/cells and the site of destruction since the lysosomes carry hydrolyzing enzymes in them.
