Question

In the image below, a 3m long diving board is supported by a post (25 cm from edge) and tied to the ground with a cable at one end. If the diving board has a mass of 50 kg, and the maximum stated load for the diving board is 300 kg, what is the maximum tension on the cable?  It won't let me post a diagram right now, but I will as soon as possible.

<---------------------3 meters------------------>

<---25 cm-->

Explanation / Answer

Let T be tension in the cable. taking moments about support point, moment of T+moment of board's weight on left of support = moment of board's weight on right of support + moment of 300 kg at the end => T*0.25 + (0.25*50/3)*(0.25/2) = (2.75*50/3)*(2.75/2) + 300*2.75 =>T = ((2.75*50/3)*(2.75/2) + 300*2.75 - (0.25*50/3)*(0.25/2))/0.25 => T = 3550 kg (ANSWER)
