Receptor mediated endocytosis (RME) plays a very important role in metabolism of cholesterol.It is through the process of receptor mediated endocytosis that cholesterol is able to enter the cells to be either used up,broken down or excreted by the cellular components.When cholesterol is not taken up by the cell via receptor mediated endocytosis due to defective RME it starts to accumulate in the blood causing its levels to increase which is known as hypercholesterolemia.This is the main cause of heart attacks in people with high cholesterol levels in blood.
