Question

In an adventure movie, a 62.0-kg stunt woman falls 7.50 m and lands in a huge air bag. Her speed just before she hit the air bag was 11.4 m/s.

I was able to figure out that the ttal work done on the stunt woman during the fall was 4028.8 J and that the work done by gravity on the stunt woman was 4557 J.

These are the parts I'm having issues with for the problem...

(c) How much work is done by air resistance on the stunt woman?
(d) Estimate the magnitude of the average force of air resistance by assuming it is constant throughout the fall.

Explanation / Answer

So the total Work (Wt) = 4028 and Work due to gravity (Wg) is 4557. So the difference here is 529J which is the work done by air resistance. Think of it as theoretically (w/o air resistance) it would be 4557 J, but in actuality it was 4028 J which means the difference is the force of air resistance, 529 J. Now for the magnitude of the average force use W = Fd. or W/d=F. The average magnitude of the force comes out to be 70.5 N. Hope this helps
